Summer Solstice" Xiazhi

Jun 23,2025
The Summer Solstice, known as Xiàzhì (夏至) in Chinese, is the 10th solar term in the traditional 24 Solar Terms (节气) of the Chinese lunisolar calendar. It marks the longest day and shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, typically occurring around June 20–22.
Astronomical Significance
The Summer Solstice happens when the Sun reaches its northernmost point in the sky, directly above the Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N).
On this day, the North Pole is tilted closest to the Sun, resulting in the maximum duration of daylight.
After the solstice, days gradually shorten as the Sun begins its southward movement.
Cultural & Agricultural Importance in China
Harvest Season – In ancient agrarian societies, Xiàzhì signaled the wheat harvest and preparation for the coming summer heat.
Yin & Yang Balance – In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it represents the peak of Yang energy (heat, light, activity), after which Yin energy (coolness, darkness) slowly increases.
Traditional Customs:
Eating Noodles – Symbolizing longevity (due to their long shape).
Cooling Foods – Drinking mung bean soup or eating watermelon to combat summer heat.
Ancestral Worship – Some regions held rituals to honor ancestors and pray for a bountiful harvest.
