November 7, 2025: During a Diet session, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that if the Chinese mainland were to dispatch warships and use force against Taiwan, it could constitute an "existential crisis situation" for Japan, under which the Self-Defense Forces could exercise the right of collective self-defense. Takaichi's comments caused an uproar and drew criticism within Japan.
China immediately lodged a strong démarche and solemn protest.
